Kathy Stearman is a retired FBI Agent having served over 26 years from 1987 through 2013. In her career, she was assigned to multiple field offices in the United States, including Alexandria, Virginia; Washington DC; San Francisco; New York City, and FBI Headquarters.

Although Stearman started her FBI career working criminal investigations, she transitioned to counter-intelligence and counter-terrorism investigations. But, it was always her dream to work in one of the FBI’s overseas offices, the Legal Attaché program. The head of a Legal Attaché office is called the Legat, for short.

Her dream finally came true when she was assigned to be the Legal Attaché in New Delhi, India, where she covered FBI operations for the entirety of India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. Later, she was assigned Legat Beijing, China, where she covered all of China and Mongolia. Most times she was the only female in the room, oftentimes the only Caucasian, and in several instances, the only non-Muslim.

Stearman’s forthcoming book, It’s Not About the Gun, is a collection of interconnected stories examining the influence of attitude and gender in her journey to achieve her dream and become FBI Legal Attaché, the most senior FBI representative in a foreign office.
