Jill Viles

Jill Viles holds a master’s in creative writing from Iowa State University, and is an annual attendee of the University of Iowa Summer Writing Festival. Her writing has appeared in Johns Hopkins Magazine, and her scientific work has been published in the journal, Gene, and the journal, Cells. In the course of researching her book on her family’s rare muscle disorder, she has collaborated with scientists at the University of Iowa performing gene therapy on mutant fruit flies.

Jill lives in rural Iowa with her husband, Jeremy, and a lively golden retriever, Yoshi. Recent empty nesters, they are enjoying visits to see their son, Martin, at the University of Iowa. Jill lives by the adage: there’s nothing a Coke with grenadine flavoring can’t remedy, and she’s charmed by both the crackle of a warm fire, and the crack of a newly opened book.
